GORINCHEM, The Netherlands – 12 September 2024 - Bioworks, PlaX™ developed a fabric that blends cotton with plant-based Luminy® PolyLactic Acid (PLA), derived from sugarcane. Bioworks is a leading Japanese innovator in sustainable textiles, stating that PLA bioplastics enhance the antimicrobial properties of fabrics.

PlaX™ fabric offers superior comfort, durability and natural antimicrobial properties. Fiber dyeing during the manufacturing process is another advantage of PlaX™, which has attracted international attention from major world consumer brands as a new material which can replace existing synthetic fibers. These properties make PlaX™ ideal for a variety of textile industry applications.

“The integration of Luminy® PLA into Bioworks' PlaX™ fabrics marks a significant step towards providing the textile industry and consumers with innovative solutions that carries a lower carbon footprint,” said Chow Pin Tan, Vice-President for Asia at TotalEnergies Corbion. He added, “Japan is renowned for its demand for high-quality, sustainable products. Through our partnership, we strive not only to meet these expectations but to surpass them, reinforcing our role in sustainable product development.”

The collaboration with Bioworks highlights TotalEnergies Corbion’s commitment to expanding its portfolio of sustainable bioplastic solutions. Luminy® PLA, already widely used in Japan, is a key component in Bioworks' fabric innovations. With a carbon footprint 75% lower than conventional plastics, Luminy® PLA supports Japan's ambitious climate goals by offering environmentally responsible alternatives.

TotalEnergies Corbion has recently partnered with Nagase, a leading Japanese distributor, to oversee the sales and distribution of Luminy® PLA bioplastics.
