- Clear acknowledgment of climate protection strategy and CO2 reduction

The international investor group Carbon Disclosure Project has again selected BASF for inclusion in the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) and Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI). According to CDP BASF is among the leading companies in the world in the category of climate change. The CDLI contains 52 companies that disclose their data in a particularly transparent and comprehensive manner. The CPLI represents 29 companies based on their exemplary performance in terms of climate change - for example with regard to their strategy, their stakeholder communication, their management system and their reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) represents 551 institutional investors holding $71 trillion in assets under management. Investors use CDP indices as assessment tools.

It is the basis for evaluating the opportunities and risks BASF is faced with due to climate change, quantifying them and implementing a strategy plan for moving forward."

BASF’s 2010 CO2 balance demonstrates that the company has managed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from production significantly: The emissions per ton of sales product have been reduced since 2002 by nearly 29% and thus BASF met its own climate goals for 2020 (25% -reduction) for the first time. In addition, sales of climate protection products increased from €6 billion in 2008 to €7.7 billion in 2010, thus an increased 10 to 12% of the total sales of the BASF Group. The CO2 balance is based on the criteria of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for CO2 reporting as well as on BASF’s certified eco-efficiency analysis method.

In September 2011, BASF was again included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). The company received special recognition from the analysts for its sustainability engagement in Genetically Modified Organisms, Product Steward­ship, Environmental Management System, Climate Strategy and Risk & Crisis Management.
