Meet Kimberlyn from our Spence operations in Chile. When she’s not working as one of our Process Control Engineers, Kimberlyn volunteers her time to being a Diversity and Inclusion Communications Leader at Spence. We sat down to hear more about her story:

What does a typical day at BHP look like for you?
A typical day for me usually starts with checking my emails and organising my tasks for the day. I work collaboratively with different departments to ensure we’re aligned and meeting our goals and spend time performing data analysis and preparing reports for the Drill and Blast team. I am constantly communicating with my colleagues - solving operational challenges is an important part of my day-to-day role.

What do you like most about working at BHP?
The thing I value most about my work at BHP is the ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment, where everyone’s contributions are appreciated. I appreciate our commitment to sustainability and innovation, and the constant search for methods to optimise our operations.

Large mining companies are often viewed through the prism of resource extraction, but BHP is dedicated to innovating sustainable practices, reducing its environmental footprint and leading by example in the transition to a greener economy. I think it goes far beyond that is traditionally expected of a mining company.

What makes you most proud of where you work?
What really makes me proud to work here is the commitment to inclusion and diversity, not just in words but in actions too. A clear example is that we currently have a 40% female workforce here in Chile. It’s a significant milestone and shows the efforts to create an equitable and diverse work environment at all levels of the organisation. Being a part of an organisation that is leading the charge towards more sustainable and ethical mining, whilst fostering a culture of diversity and inclusion, is what makes me truly proud to work at BHP.

What are you passionate about when you’re not at work?
Outside of work, I am passionate about exploring nature, whether that’s feeling the fog on the hill or practicing Stand Up Paddling on the beach. Working with my team at Women in Mining Chile also fills me with energy.

I also participated in the ‘Silence with Meaning’ book project. This work, funded by the US Embassy and supported by BHP, compiled 10 powerful stories about inclusion experiences and challenges, offering a window into the lives of deaf people. As a deaf woman myself, being part of this project has been one of the most rewarding achievements of my career and allowed me to contribute to making important stories of improvement and resilience visible.
