April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Northern and central Europe may remain closed to air traffic until April 22 as winds push ash from volcanic eruptions in Iceland across the continent, forecasters said. European airlines canceled more than 77 percent of their flights yesterday as airports from Dublin to Moscow closed. No planes will operate out of the U.K. until at least 1 p.m. London time today, the National Air Traffic Service said. German airports will remain closed until 2 p.m. Berlin time, the DFS air traffic control agency said.

maar beleggers zien de bonussen en salarissen weer de hoogte invliegen.
Er is nog weinig geleerd van de "kredietcrisis, en de "Peer groepen" zijn kredietcrisis bestendig geweest. Waarom wordt er steeds maar bedrijven uit die Peer groep gekeken? Kaart je dit aan in de AVA, dan hoor je ze zeggen, dan kunnen wij geen juiste kandidaat vinden. Maar als ze die gevonden hebben, dan "vliegen" ze als ze even elders iets meer en beter kunnen verdienen weer weg.
Wij hebben bij KPN i.v.m. die bonussen etc het volgende gezegd: "waar is de tijd dat de topman nog van onderaf naar de top van het bedrijf is gegroeid? Toen was het een "eer" zo ver te mogen/kunnen komen en die bestuurder kende het bedrijf als zijn/haar broekzak en was trots op het behalen van die positie. Toen moest niet elke minuut betaald worden, het was zijn/haar bedrijf geworden, de handen werden uit de nouwen gestoken en naar tijd werd niet gekeken, ze gingen ervoor. Nu moet voor elke prestatie extra betaald worden, want als er een onderdeel wordt verkocht, dan staan daar extra bonussen etc. voor, maar dat behoort toch tot zijn/haar werk?
Wij zeggen dit niet alleen hier bij KPN, maar het is bedoeld in algemene zin, want je komt het vrijwel bij elk bedrijf tegen, deze cultuur.
Na de AVA werden wij door 1 van de mensen achter de groene tafel bedankt.
Dus er zijn nog voorstanders en misschien komt die mentaliteit weer terug of zal dat een stille hoop zijn?

ESCANAFFLES (AFN) - In België is de eerste Europese fabriek geopend die plastic maakt uit biologisch materiaal zoals suikerbiet en maïszetmeel. De fabriek Futerro in Escanaffles kan 1500 ton per jaar produceren. Dat meldde Frédéric Van Gansberghe van biotechbedrijf Galactic, dat samen met Total het initiatief heeft genomen, zaterdag in de Vlaamse krant De Tijd.

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- New Hope Corp., battling Peabody Energy Corp. and Noble Group Ltd. for control of Macarthur Coal Ltd., will look for other acquisitions if it is unsuccessful in its bid for Australia’s largest producer of pulverized coal, Chairman Rob Millner said. Macarthur said April 15 that New Hope’s revised takeover bid, which included A$950 million ($878 million) in cash, doesn’t represent an adequate premium for control of the company, and therefore will not recommend the offer to shareholders. Instead, Brisbane-based Macarthur said April 16 it intends to enter into talks with St. Louis-based Peabody, which sweetened its bid to A$16 a share, valuing the company at A$4.1 billion.

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Ernst & Young LLP’s Item Club will say tomorrow it raised its forecast for U.K. economic growth next year, predicting that the weakness of the pound will fuel exports. Gross domestic product will rise 2.7 percent next year, up from an estimate in January for 2.5 percent, the researchers, who use the same model as the U.K. Treasury, will say according to an e-mailed statement. The economy “will struggle” to expand 1 percent this year, the same amount predicted earlier, the group will say. The pound has dropped about 25 percent on a trade-weighted basis since the start of 2007, and U.K. businesses should take advantage of that, the group will say. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is trying to narrow the opposition Conservatives’ lead in voter opinion polls ahead of the May 6 election by claiming his decisions will prevent a return to recession.

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- Home sales and orders for long- lasting goods probably climbed in March, increases that enhance the odds the U.S. recovery will be sustained, economists said before reports this week. Purchases of new and existing homes rose to a combined 5.63 million annual rate, the first gain in four months, according to the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. Bookings for goods meant to last several years may have advanced for a fourth straight time.

April 15 (Bloomberg) -- Dark chocolate may be just what the doctor ordered for patients with damaged livers. A Spanish study found chocolate can help lower blood pressure in the liver and reduce damage to blood vessels in people with cirrhosis, a potentially fatal scarring of the liver that can lead to organ failure and cancer. Only antioxidant-rich dark chocolate is helpful, researchers said in a study presented today at the International Liver Conference in Vienna.
