July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Reckitt Benckiser Plc, the maker of Cillit Bang cleaners, agreed to buy SSL International Plc for 2.54 billion pounds ($3.9 billion) to add brands including Durex condoms and Scholl footcare products.
SSL shareholders will receive 1,163 pence per share and be entitled to a dividend of 8 pence a share, Slough, England-based Reckitt said in a statement today. The total is 33 percent more than SSL’s closing share price yesterday, the bidder said.

July 21 (Bloomberg) -- BP Plc will keep its damaged Gulf of Mexico well sealed today because there’s no evidence of a leak that could erupt into another gusher like the one that caused the largest U.S. oil spill, the government said. Pressure inside the well has risen slowly to 6,834 pounds per square inch since BP sealed it July 15, indicating oil and gas is not being forced out elsewhere in the well bore. A seabed natural gas leak about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) away is from an abandoned well, National Incident Commander Thad Allen said yesterday on a conference call.

July 21 (Bloomberg) -- Bank of England policy makers voted to keep interest rates at a record low this month as the economic outlook had “deteriorated a little,” overruling Andrew Sentance’s call for an increase for a second month.
The Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Mervyn King, voted 7-1 to keep the benchmark interest rate at 0.5 percent, according to minutes of the July 8 decision released in London today. A SEC spokesman declined to comment to the Journal and SEC could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside of regular U.S. business hours.
