Bernanke said central bankers “remain prepared” to act as needed to aid growth even as they get ready to eventually raise interest rates from almost zero and shrink a record balance sheet. While Fed officials plan for the exit, “we also recognize that the economic outlook remains unusually uncertain,” Bernanke said today in testimony to the Senate Banking Committee. “We will continue to carefully assess ongoing financial and economic developments, and we remain prepared to take further policy actions as needed to foster a return to full utilization of our nation’s productive potential in a context of price stability.”

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world’s second-largest computer-memory chipmaker, reported operating profit and sales that beat analysts’ estimates as demand for personal computers and a shortage of the chips drove up prices. Second-quarter operating profit was a record 1.05 trillion won ($870 million), compared with a loss of 211 billion won a year earlier, Ichon, South Korea-based Hynix said in a statement today. Revenue jumped 96 percent to a record 3.28 trillion won. Hynix said the rebound in computer demand that helped Intel Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. post higher earnings will stay “robust” for the rest of the year.

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- More Americans than projected filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, a sign firings remain elevated even as the economy is expanding. Initial jobless claims jumped by 37,000 to 464,000 in the week ended July 17, exceeding the highest estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The survey median projected claims would climb to 445,000. The number of people receiving unemployment insurance and those getting extended payments dropped. The figures underscore projections that a lack of jobs will restrain consumer spending, the biggest part of the economy, and lead to slower growth in the second half of the year. It will probably take a “significant amount of time” to restore the almost 8.5 million jobs lost in 2008 and 2009, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke told Congress yesterday.

July 22 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Co., the automaker 61 percent owned by the U.S., is buying subprime lender AmeriCredit Corp. for $3.5 billion to help it reach more customers with leases and loans to borrowers with faulty credit records. GM and Americredit reached a definitive agreement, which has been approved by the boards of both companies. GM said the deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter. The price of $24.50 a share is 24 percent more than Fort Worth, Texas-based AmeriCredit’s closing price yesterday of $19.70 a share in New York Stock Exchange composite trading.

Fugro awarded long term diving contract in Brazil
Fugro Brasil - Serviços Submarinos e Levantamentos Ltda. has been awarded a long term diving contract by Otto Candies for Petrobras in Brazil. The three party-contract has a value for Fugro of approximately USD 100 million, involving ROV and diving services. Otto Candies is providing the Diving Support Vessel (DSV) and the contract will be managed jointly. It is a 5-year contract with an additional 5-year option, with operations commencing mid 2011. The brand new vessel Kelly Ann is being mobilised at Candies shipyard in the USA with a 14 man - 300m rated saturation diving system, a work class ROV (FCV 3000) and an observation ROV (Lynx), and will work for Petrobras offshore Brazil 24 hours, 7 days a week. The vessel will be engaged with Inspection Repair and Maintenance activities along the Brazilian coast. This project consolidates Fugro's position as a leading diving operator in Brazil.

Purchases of existing houses dropped a less-than-forecast 5.1 percent to a 5.37 million annual rate, figures from the National Association of Realtors showed today in Washington. The number of transactions will be “very low” in coming months, reflecting the end of the government incentive, the group’s chief economist said in a news conference.

The firm, one of the biggest buyout companies in the world with investments in Hilton hotels and Freescale Semiconductors, said economic net income was $205 million, up from $181 million a year earlier. The value of its private equity portfolio rose 3 percent during the quarter, while its real estate portfolio jumped 19 percent. Adjusted ENI per share was 18 cents, ahead of analysts' average forecast of 16 cents, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Over groei gesproken, Citigroup heeft de groeiverwachting van China negatief bijgesteld van 10,5% naar 9,5%. En wereldwijd een groei van 3,7% voor 2010 en 3,3% voor 2011. Beide met 0,1% verlaagd. Dat vind ik nu zo knap van de analisten, dat ze zo exact kunnen voorspellen. Morgen zijn deze cijfers weer vergeten.
