Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has spent 15 years remaking the stock market into 11 competing exchanges and hundreds of computer-driven traders. In the process it has virtually eliminated the traditional market makers who bought and sold stocks when no one else would.
Now the SEC is concerned the revolution has gone too far, leaving markets vulnerable when selling starts to snowball.

Sept. 13 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. government posted a smaller budget deficit in August compared with the same month last year, helped by rising tax receipts.
The excess of spending over revenue totaled $90.5 billion last month, smaller than the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and down 13 percent from $103.6 billion in August 2009, according to a Treasury Department report issued today in Washington. The gap for the fiscal year that started in October was $1.26 trillion compared with $1.37 trillion last year at the same time.

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- China will introduce credit-default swaps by year-end, allowing banks to hedge risk while restricting the contracts to avoid pitfalls the U.S. credit markets experienced over the last several years, according to an official with a state-backed Chinese financial association. China will limit the amount of leverage used in credit swaps and won’t permit the contracts to be written on high-risk assets such as subprime mortgages, Shi Wenchao, secretary general of the National Association of Financial Market Institutional Investors, told reporters at a briefing in New York. Investors in the derivatives will also be required to own the underlying security, Shi said.

Zojuist kregen wij van de AFM een mailtje. Ook zij zien het, maar kunnen niets zeggen i.v.m. geheimhoudingplicht.

Ga als AFM eens met Euronext aan de tafel zitten en zeg: 't moet nu over zijn anders sluiten we de tent voor verschillende onderdelen, bijv. de lokale markt voor drie dagen.
Dan zal 't feest snel over zijn. Nu blijft 't misschien bij praten. Veel beleggers doen niets meer of enkele transacties. Schijnbaar is dat ook de bedoeling,de particulieren moeten naar de thuisfondsen van de Effectenkredietinstellingen, dan hebben zij geheel vrij spel. De Animateurs maken nu al het spel, leggen aan beide zijden van het boekje grote aantallen en daar tussen houden zij de handel. Vrije handel?

The National Federation of Independent Business’s optimism index increased to 88.8 from July’s 88.1 reading. Four of the index’s 10 components rose and one was unchanged. The measure averaged 100.6 in the five years before the economic slump began in December 2007.

Reuters) - Best Buy (BBY.N) reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit and raised its full-year outlook as it benefited from strength in its mobile phone business, and its shares rose nearly 8 percent. The largest consumer electronics chain, which operates stores under the Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile, and Car Phone Warehouse names, said its operating margin rose 1.1 percentage points to 3.6 percent in the second quarter ended August 28.
Net profit rose to $254 million, or 60 cents a share, in the second quarter from $158 million, or 37 cents a share, a year earlier.

ACE said Rain and Hail will continue to operate as a separate and distinct franchise within the company's ACE Westchester division and Insurance-North America operations.
