ROTTERDAM (AFN) - De Rotterdamse haven heeft tot nu toe een goed jaar achter de rug. De goederenoverslag nam de eerste negen maanden toe met 13,4 procent tot 321 miljoen ton. Vrijwel alle goederensoorten vertoonden een positieve ontwikkeling, maakte het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam vrijdag bekend.

De overslag van ijzererts en schroot steeg maar liefst met 112 procent. Ook kolen (2 procent), overig droog massagoed (31 procent), ruwe olie (3 procent), minerale olieproducten (5 procent), overig nat massagoed (9 procent), containers (15 procent), roll on/roll off (6 procent), overig stukgoed (14 procent) vertoonden positieve cijfers. Alleen de overslag van agribulk (granen, zaden en veevoedergrondstoffen) liep met 7 procent terug.
De behandeling van droog massagoed sprong 40 procent omhoog tot 65 miljoen ton. Het nat massagoed groeide met 5 procent tot 154 miljoen ton. De groei van stukgoederen kwam uit op 14 procent naar 102 miljoen ton.

Solvay kost Abbott 513 miljoen in 3Q
De gevolgen van de overname van Solvay kostte Abbott in het derde kwartaal (3Q) zo’n 513 miljoen dollar. Abbott rekent in totaal op ruim 1,3 miljard dollar lasten voor de integratie van het bedrijf. Daarbij zullen circa 3.000 Solvay-banen verloren gaan. Abbott boekte in het derde kwartaal een nettowinst van 891 miljoen dollar, of 57 dollarcent per aandeel. Dat is 40 procent minder dan vorig jaar. De afname komt vooral door de kosten verbonden aan de overname van Solvay Pharmaceuticals en aan de recall van het diabetesmedicijn Meridia.

The Munich-based Ifo institute said its business climate index, based on a survey of 7,000 executives, rose to 107.6 from 106.8 in September. That’s the highest since May 2007.

Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The amount of water discovered on the moon last year when scientists purposely slammed a rocket into the lunar south pole may be enough to help set up a space fueling station, according to latest data from the mission. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration crashed the Centaur rocket into a crater called Cabeus, kicking up about two tons of material estimated to contain 5.6 percent water, according to reports in the journal Science. That’s more water by mass than in the Sahara desert, which has 2 to 3 percent. There may be sufficient water to separate into its component parts, hydrogen and oxygen, and use the hydrogen for rocket fuel, said Anthony Colaprete, a planetary scientist for NASA at the Ames Research Laboratory in California and an author of three of the papers. That could mean the moon would be useful as a launching point for missions to other destinations, such as a moon of Saturn or Jupiter.

Reuters) - U.S. healthcare real-estate investment trust Ventas Inc (VTR.N) said it will buy the real-estate assets of Atria Senior Living Group for about $1.5 billion, making it the largest U.S. owner of senior housing communities.
The company said it will pay $150 million cash and 25 million common shares, valued at $1.35 billion, to acquire 118 senior housing communities from Atria.
Ventas will also assume $1.6 billion of Atria's net debt.
