Net income amounted to 1.66 billion Swiss francs ($1.71 billion) in the third quarter, compared with a loss of 564 million francs a year earlier, the Zurich-based bank said in a statement today.

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co., the world’s most profitable automaker, reported record third-quarter net income of $1.69 billion and said it is paying down debt faster than planned as new models boost its U.S. market share. The move brings the amount of money authorized for buybacks to $12.3 billion, the Armonk, New York-based company said today in a statement. In April, IBM authorized $8 billion in stock repurchases. Since taking over as chief executive officer in 2002, Sam Palmisano has spent more than $68 billion on stock buybacks, about 38 percent of IBM’s current market value. IBM expects to ask for additional buyback authorization at an April board meeting, it said in the statement.
