Bernanke embarked on a historic test of unconventional monetary policy by using tools devised during the financial crisis to add fuel to an economy that’s been expanding for 15 months. The rejection on Wednesday was a major blow for BHP Chief Executive Marius Kloppers, coming after the 2008 failure of a $120 billion-plus takeover of rival Rio Tinto and the collapse of a planned $116 billion iron ore joint venture with Rio earlier this year. BHP investors are betting the world's biggest miner will now return capital through a share buyback or expand its interests in oil and gas in an effort to put its growing cash pile to work. While Canada gave BHP 30 days to come up with additional proposals that might make its offer for the world's largest fertilizer producer more palatable, the chances of a successful modified bid appeared remote. BHP and Ottawa have already been in negotiations for weeks about how the miner could shape its offer.

The kiwi’s advance against the U.S. dollar was the main reason behind Warner Bros Productions Ltd.’s threat to move production of its new “Lord of the Rings” prequels away from New Zealand, Prime Minister John Key said last week. In the 11 years since director Peter Jackson first started filming the “Rings” series in the country, the kiwi has soared to 77 U.S. cents from 50 cents, inflating costs for the Hollywood studio. Key last week promised Warner as much as $25 million in subsidies after the studio demanded incentives to offset the currency’s gain. His offer ensured New Zealand will provide the backdrop to Tolkien’s Middle Earth in the two “Hobbit” movies, nine years after the original “Rings” trilogy finished.

Reuters) - Dell Inc, the world's No.2 PC maker, will focus its M&A activity on expanding IT services in specific markets as it diversifies beyond its core PC business, a senior executive said on Thursday. The company would not concentrate on making huge acquisitions in the near future, Steve Schuckenbrock, global president for Dell's large enterprise business, told a news conference. "Services expansion on a geographic basis is a priority," he said. "China is high on that list. "Schuckenbrock's comments come after Dell engaged in a bidding war with rival Hewlett-Packard Co for high-end storage maker 3PAR, with HP ultimately winning the $2.4 billion battle. Dell announced it would buy cloud-computing services company Boomi earlier this week to shore up its ability to provide software over computer networks, in a move it says will help smooth data transfers between programs.
