The Nordic country’s budget surplus equaled 10.3 percent of gross domestic product last year as oil revenue and the lowest unemployment rate in Europe protected government finances from the drain suffered by deficit-laden countries such as Greece and Ireland. Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan’s dollar rose the most in 18 months before a government report today that will show the economy expanded more than 8 percent for a fourth quarter. The currency’s gain also reflected a reversal of late intervention by the central bank yesterday, when the currency closed 0.2 percent weaker after being 1 percent stronger two minutes before the end of the trading session. Government data today will show the economy expanded 8.3 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier, after growth of about 13 percent in the first half.

Reuters) - Canada's Western Coal Corp (WTN.TO) said on Thursday it was holding exclusive talks for a potential business combination with the U.S. coal firm Walter Energy Inc (WLT.N). The combination of Western Coal and Walter's operations would create one of the world's largest pure play publicly-traded producers of metallurgical coal with geographically diversified assets, Western Coal said. As per the deal negotiations, Western shareholders would receive a mixture of cash and Walter shares valued at C$11.50 per Western share, the company said.

Nov. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Cardinal Health Inc., the Dublin, Ohio-based drug distributor, said it plans to buy closely held Kinray Inc. for $1.3 billion in cash to expand in the northeastern U.S.. The deal may add to earnings in fiscal 2011 and will contribute at least 12 cents a share to profit excluding some items in fiscal 2012, depending on the timing of the closing, Cardinal said today in a statement. The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s general economic index jumped to 22.5, exceeding the most optimistic forecast in a Bloomberg News survey, from 1 a month earlier. Readings greater than zero signal expansion in the area covering eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.
The figures contrast with a report earlier this week showing New York-area manufacturing contracted in November for the first time in more than a year.
