Reuters) - Oil and gas exploration company Energy XXI (EXXI.O) agreed to buy nine Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) oil and gas fields in the shallow waters of the Gulf of Mexico for $1.01 billion, increasing the company's reserves and production by more than 70 percent. The fields are located on the Gulf's continental shelf, where it is cheaper and easier to drill than in the deepwater. The purchase would make Energy XXI the third-largest oil producer on the shelf, the company said on Sunday. The fields hold an estimated 66 million barrels of proved and probable reserves of oil and gas, 61 percent of which is oil, Energy XXI said. They produce about 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, 53 percent of which is oil. The company said the acquisition would increase its proved and probable reserves 72 percent. Its production would rise more than 77 percent

Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Families and friends of 29 men trapped in a coal mine on New Zealand’s West Coast are waiting for the start of a rescue operation more than three days after an explosion at the pit. Teams are drilling a 160-meter hole into the Pike River Coal Co. mine about 50 kilometers (30 miles) north of Greymouth on the nation’s South Island to test air quality and send down a camera. No contact has been made with the men since an explosion cut communications at about 3:50 p.m. local time on Nov. 19. “The situation still remains grave,” Police commander Gary Knowles told a news conference today. “Every effort is being made to carry out a rescue. We remain optimistic. This is a search and recovery operation.” Rescuers are preparing to deploy laser imaging gear, bore cameras and more efficient sampling technology once the drilling is completed, Pike River’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Whittall said in the conference. Whittall yesterday said there were signs of “combustion” that were generating a mix of gases making it unsafe to begin a rescue.

Nov. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Qatar Telecom QSC, the country’s largest company by revenue, and Princesse Holding of Tunisia will buy 50 percent of Telecom Tunisie for $1.2 billion from Orascom Telecom Holding as the Egyptian company sells assets. Qatar Telecom’s unit Wataniya Telecom signed an agreement with a group led by Princesse Holding, a diversified holding company based Tunis, to purchase the stake, Qatar Telecom said in an e-mailed statement today. Wataniya already holds 50 percent of Tunisiana.

In addition to being a blow to ANZ, Hana's offer for KEB places a hurdle on South Korea's $6 billion-plus sale of the government's stake in Woori, as Hana was expected to be a leading bidder in that auction. The deal by Hana to purchase U.S. private equity firm Lone Star's 51 percent stake in South Korea's fifth-largest bank has seen an auction that began at least four years ago and saw several failed bidders, various advisers and a raid by government prosecutors on Lone Star's Seoul offices. The firm was later cleared of any wrongdoing. A deal with KEB would mark the biggest private equity auction in Asia this year. The Hana-KEB deal is set to be announced as early as Wednesday, the source familiar with the deal said.

Novell will also sell some intellectual- property assets to a group technology companies led by Microsoft Corp. for $450 million. De strijd is nu niet 1 op 1, maar misschien wil Nexas de Chinezen wel proberen uit te lokken voor een hogere bieden, om zo de concurrent extra te laten betalen voor Draka.

Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Monday it will buy Summit Aeronautics Group, which makes titanium and other hard metal structures for commercial and military aircraft. Boeing did not disclose the terms of the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Summit performs hard metal machining on 747-8 fail-safe bars, which allow the flaps to move on the wings, 787 edge frames that fit around the doors, and 767 main-landing-gear beams. It will continue its work on these Boeing programs and make other machined parts for the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing said.

Traditional TV watching has retained its popularity even as the options for online and on-demand content delivery multiply. While broadcasters themselves are experimenting with new delivery models, their core business -- beaming scheduled programs into viewers’ living rooms -- has proved resilient. “TV viewing is at an all-time high,” Philippe Dauman, chief executive officer of Viacom Inc., the owner of MTV Networks and Comedy Central, said in interview in Avignon, France this month. “The sector that we’re in is, in some ways, leading the economy.”
