Jan. 31 (Bloomberg) -- European inflation probably quickened to the fastest pace in more than two years in January, keeping pressure on officials to monitor price gains that are exceeding the European Central Bank’s limit.
The inflation rate in the 17-nation euro region rose to 2.3 percent from 2.2 percent in December, according to the median of 37 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey. That would be the highest since October 2008. Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office, will publish the data at 11 a.m. in Luxembourg today.

Reuters) - Daito Trust Construction, a Japanese apartment building developer, said it would spend up to $2.6 billion to buy a stake held by its founder and retire those shares. Daito said it would buy a 31 percent stake owned by a company controlled by founder and chairman, Katsumi Tada, who had in 2008 tried to sell his stake, attracting a few bidders including a group led by a U.S. real estate investment firm Aetos Capital. Daito said on Monday it would spend up to 211.7 billion yen ($2.58 billion) to buy a total stake of 33.08 percent in the buyout through a tender offer at 5,445 yen per share.

WIESBADEH (AFN) - De Duitse detailhandel heeft in 2010 de omzet met 1,2 procent zien stijgen ten opzichte van het crisisjaar 2009. Dat maakte het Duitse bureau voor de statistiek maandag bekend op basis van voorlopige cijfers. In 2009 kromp de omzet nog met 3,1 procent. De groei van de detailhandelsomzet laat zien dat de Duitse consument weer bereid is geld te spenderen. Aantrekkende binnenlandse bestedingen zijn goed voor de groei van de economie. In december was nog wel een onverwachte tegenvaller te zien in de detailhandelsomzet in Duitsland. De omzet nam met 1,3 procent af op jaarbasis en met 0,3 procent op maandbasis. Economen gepolst door persbureau Reuters gingen hier uit van stijgingen van respectievelijk 1,1 en 2 procent.

LUXEMBURG (AFN) - De inflatie in de eurozone is in januari gestegen tot 2,4 procent op jaarbasis. Dit maakte het Europese statistiekbureau Eurostat maandag bekend. In december stegen de prijzen in de toen nog zestien eurolanden ten opzichte van een jaar eerder nog met 2,2 procent. De prijsstijging in januari was een fractie groter dan verwacht. Economen rekenden op een inflatie van gemiddeld 2,3 procent. Het was de tweede maand op rij dat de inflatie uitkwam boven de 2 procent. De Europese Centrale Bank (ECB) hanteert een doelstelling voor de inflatie van net onder de 2 procent.

De genomineerden voor de Pfizer Persprijs zijn bekend. Thema van de prijs was dit keer Roken, volgens Pfizer een van de grootste bedreigingen van de volksgezondheid. Go Acquisition B.V. ("Go Acquisition") en Gamma Holding N.V. ("Gamma Holding") maken bekend dat goedkeuring van de Europese Commissie is verkregen voor de gezamenlijke uitoefening van de zeggenschap over Gamma Holding door Gilde en Parcom door middel van Go Acquisition. Deze goedkeuring was vereist in verband met het openbare bod van Go Acquisition op Gamma Holding. Dit bod (het "Bod") is beschreven in het door de AFM goedgekeurde biedingsbericht dat op 13 januari 2011 verkrijgbaar is gesteld. Eerder keurden de Zwitserse mededingingsautoriteiten de transactie al goed. Met de goedkeuring van de Europese Commissie is de onderlinge overeenkomst tussen Gilde, Parcom en Go Acquisition onvoorwaardelijk van kracht geworden.

Chrysler on Monday reported a $199 million net loss for the quarter, hurt by high interest rates on the $7.4 billion in loans from the U.S. and Canadian governments stemming from its bailout. Excluding those expenses, Chrysler reported an operating profit of $198 million. Chrysler's global sales last year topped 1.5 million cars and trucks, buoyed by a raft of new models. Reuters) - U.S. biotechnology company Genzyme Corp and Sanofi-Aventis have executed a nondisclosure agreement, effectively giving the French company the ability to examine Genzyme's books as they continue talks on a possible merger.
While the two companies previously disclosed they are in talks, Genzyme will be sharing certain nonpublic information with Sanofi, leading to the need for the agreement, according to a U.S. securities filing. Sanofi previously launched an $18.5 billion hostile offer, or $69 a share, to acquire Genzyme, which rejected the bid as too low. Genzyme shares closed on Friday at $71.10 and have consistently traded above the offer price. Sanofi shares rose 0.6 percent on Monday.

Reuters) - Alcoa, the largest U.S. aluminum producer, will buy TransDigm Group's fastener business for about $240 million to expand its presence in the aerospace market where demand for the metal is expected to grow rapidly. Earlier this month, Alcoa had forecast a 12-percent rise in demand for aluminum this year, driven by aerospace and auto manufacturing. The company expects demand for the metal in the aerospace sector to grow 7 percent.

Reuters) - Intel Corp cut its first quarter revenue forecast by $300 million on Monday due to the costs associated with correcting a design flaw it discovered in one of its chips. Intel said it has stopped shipments of the chip and has implemented a fix. It will begin delivering an updated version of the chip to customers in late February. Total cost to repair and replace the chip is expected to be around $700 million, it said.

Pharming discontinues funding of DNage
Leiden, The Netherlands, 31 January, 2011. Biotech company Pharming Group NV ("Pharming") (NYSE Euronext: PHARM) today announces that it has discontinued the funding of DNage. In July 2010, Pharming announced the completion of the spin-off of its subsidiary DNage. As part of the spin- off agreement, Pharming agreed to provide DNage with an undisclosed,limited bridge funding for a specified term, to allow DNage time to seek new investors. DNage has been unable to secure new investors and its shareholders have now decided to put DNage into voluntary liquidation.

DUBLIN (AFN) - De Ierse economie zal dit jaar ondanks alle financiële problemen waarschijnlijk voor het eerst sinds 2007 weer groeien. Het herstel is echter minder sterk dan eerder werd aangenomen. Dat bleek maandag uit nieuwe prognoses van de Ierse centrale bank. De bank voorziet voor 2011 een economische groei van 1 procent. Bij de vorige prognose werd nog uitgegaan van een vooruitgang met 2,4 procent. Die schatting werd echter gemaakt voordat het land eind vorig jaar werd gedwongen om noodkredieten aan te vragen bij de Europese Unie en het Internationaal Monetair Fonds om de financiële problemen te bestrijden.

Reuters) - AMB Property Corp has struck a deal to buy rival ProLogis for $5.7 billion in stock, combining the two largest U.S. owners of warehouse and distribution centers around the world in one of the biggest real-estate transactions since the financial crisis. The agreement comes as ProLogis, the larger of the two companies, has been struggling with debt. While both companies operate in the United States, the deal will give AMB a large presence in the UK and Eastern Europe. The new company initially will be run by the chief executives of AMB and ProLogis. AMB CEO Hamid Moghadam will become sole CEO at the end of 2012. The company will be based in San Francisco, home to AMB.

U.S. GDP (Q4) rose by 3.2%, behind analyst forecasts of 3.5%, and up from 2.6% in Q3. Personal Consumption (Q4) led the way, growing by 4.4%, ahead of the expected 4.1%.
The Employment Cost Index (Q4) was 0.4%, the same as the change seen in Q3, and slightly below estimates of 0.5%.
The University of Michigan Confidence Index (Jan) came in at 74.2, ahead of the 73.1 expectation and December’s measure of 72.7.
Spain’s Unemployment Rate (Q4) came in at 20.3%, up from 19.8% in Q3 and is now at its highest level since Q2/97 when it was 20.7%.
Egypt’s Monetary Policy Committee left its policy rate at 8.25%, in line with expectations, amid increasing protests.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Last week, global biotech company Amgen (AMGN) announced that it has agreed to purchase private Phase III oncolytic virus company BioVex for up to $1 billion ($425 million upfront + $575 million in potential milestones). This news gives Canaccord Genuity Life Sciences Analyst Neil Maruoka additional confidence in Oncolytics’ approach to treating cancer. Maruoka believes that Amgen’s validation of the oncolytic virus space highlights the potential for big pharma partnering interest for Reolysin. Oncolytics' lead product, Reolysin, is a live virus that has the ability to replicate in certain cancers, thus destroying the cancer cell. Oncolytics has received a Special Protocol Assessment from the FDA for Reolysin and has initiated a Phase III development program for the drug. Maruoka expects that Oncolytics will partner Reolysin in 2011. Data from two Oncolytics studies in lung cancer (NSCLC and SCC of the lung) are expected in the first half of 2011.
Maruoka believes that positive results from either study could attract partnering interest.

Reuters) - Japan's Toshiba Corp more than doubled its quarterly operating profit on booming sales of NAND flash memory chips and robust demand for LCD panels used in smartphones and tablets. But the sprawling conglomerate cut its full year sales forecast and left its operating profit outlook unchanged for the year to March, citing a strong yen and uncertain demand for some of its other products, which include everything from home appliances to nuclear power plants. South Korean rival Samsung Electronics, is expected to benefit this year from booming demand for smartphones and tablets, but Toshiba's hiving off of its mobile phone division may have improved its chances of maintaining close ties with Apple. "I think they are still able to compete in semiconductors, although it is a very difficult market," analyst Yoshiharu Izumi of JP Morgan said of Toshiba.
