Reuters) - A frail Bernard Madoff, facing the rest of his life in prison, said a variety of banks and hedge funds were complicit in and "had to know" about his epic Ponzi scheme before it was uncovered, The New York Times reported.
In his first interview for publication since his December 2008 arrest, Madoff said banks and hedge funds who dealt with his investment advisory firm demonstrated a "willful blindness" toward his activities, and failed to examine discrepancies between his regulatory filings and other information.
"They had to know," Madoff, described as noticeably thinner and dressed in khaki prison clothing, said in a visiting room in the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina. "But the attitude was sort of, 'If you're doing something wrong, we don't want to know.'" Madoff, 72, is serving a 150-year prison sentence for what prosecutors called his $65 billion Ponzi scheme, which was uncovered in December 2008. Irving Picard, a court-appointed trustee seeking money for Madoff victims, has filed lawsuits seeking tens of billions of dollars from companies and individuals he believes benefited from or aided in Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

Reuters) - BHP Billiton (BHP.AX), the world's biggest miner, plans to pour $80 billion into expansions over the next five years and return cash to investors rather than chase ambitious takeovers, after nearly doubling its first-half profit to a record. The Anglo-Australian giant, flush with cash, said it would more than double its share buyback to $10 billion, to be completed in 2011, playing down the near term chances of a major acquisition. "The biggest surprise is the commitment to spend $80 billion over the next five years," said James Bruce, portfolio manager at Perpetual Investments, one of BHP's top 10 Australian shareholders. "We think that this demonstrates the challenges that the industry is having satisfying rising demand, while replacing declining production from mature operations," he said.

FRANKFURT (AFN) - De Duitse fabrikant van luxe auto's Daimler, eigenaar van Mercedes-Benz, heeft vorig jaar goede zaken gedaan. Het concern kon het verlies van 2,6 miljard euro in 2009 ombuigen in een nettowinst van 4,7 miljard euro, maakte Daimler woensdag bekend. De omzet ging in 2010 met bijna een kwart omhoog tot 97,8 miljard euro. Daimler verkocht in totaal 1,9 miljoen auto's, een stijging van 22 procent ten opzichte van het voorgaande jaar. In het vierde kwartaal kwam de nettowinst uit op 1,1 miljard euro. In dezelfde periode een jaar eerder stond een verlies onderaan de streep van 352 miljoen euro. Dat het goed gaat met de onderneming komt niet geheel als een verrassing. Daimler verhoogde vorig jaar tot drie keer toe zijn winstverwachting, vooral dankzij een sterke vraag uit Azië.

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. unemployment claims unexpectedly rose in January, underlining the fragility of the labor market a year after the economy emerged from recession and as public-spending cuts start in earnest. The number of people receiving jobless benefits rose 2,400 to 1.46 million, the Office for National Statistics in London said today. The median of 25 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey was for a drop of 3,000. Unemployment based on International Labour Organization methods rose by 44,000 in the fourth quarter to 2.49 million.

Housing starts climbed 15 percent to a 596,000 annual rate, the most this year, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. Work started on 78 percent more dwellings with two or more units, overshadowing a drop in single-family houses that indicates the housing market continues to struggle.

Hey, wasn't consensus at 5.4%? China's January headline CPI inflation stood at 4.9% year-over-year (YoY) and 1% monthover- month (MoM). It should be noted that, beginning with this latest CPI report, China's National Bureau of Statistics has reweighted the basket of goods that comprises the CPI, placing more emphasis on the price of housing and less emphasis on the price of food, which has driven inflation in recent months. The weight of housing in the new CPI basket had been up-weighted by 4.22 percentage points (pp), while food was down-weighted by 2.21 pp. Credit Suisse Chief Economist for Non-Japan Asia
Dong Tao sees the following trends are revealed in the January CPI report: 1) food inflation continued trending up, up 10.3% YoY in January; 2) services inflation jumped to 4.6% YoY from 2.8% YoY in December; and 3) housing inflation accelerated to 6.8% YoY from 6% YoY in the previous month. Dong says the acceleration in services inflation, which was up 1.8 pp from the previous month, is the biggest takeaway from the January data. He has long argued that CPI this year will surprise on the upside, as services inflation is expected to rise. Dong doesn't see rising inflation coming to an end any time soon, which means that monetary tightening will continue, perhaps more than what market expects. He reiterates his call that CPI inflation, will
likely exceed 6% by mid-year, prompting more aggressive "normalization". In his view, liquidity in the system has become tight, after 200-250 bp of required reserves ratio (RRR) hikes since last year. He expects the People's Bank of China to raise the RRR by an additional 150 bp, and frequently use discretionary reserve ratio hike to penalize aggressive lenders. Combined with
lending quota, RRR hikes and discretionary RRR hikes, China's quantitative tightening will continue. While the authorities are reluctant to raise interest rates, Dong thinks they will soon realize that both quantitative and interest rates must be normalized to counter the rising and persistent inflation pressure, which widens the negative real interest rates. Dong, one of the guys who made the call on China early on (both up and down), has been one of the most aggressive forecasters of interest rate hikes. He is
looking for a 160 bp hike in lending rate and 175 bp hike in deposit rates by the end of this year.

WASHINGTON (AFN) - De verkoop van nieuwbouwwoningen in de Verenigde Staten is in januari fors gestegen. Het aantal afgegeven bouwvergunningen daalde echter aanzienlijk. Dat bleek woensdag uit cijfers van het Amerikaanse ministerie van Handel. Omgerekend naar het aantal verkopen in een heel jaar werden in januari 596.000 nieuwbouwwoningen verkocht. Dat is 14,6 procent meer dan in december en het hoogste aantal sinds september vorig jaar. Het ministerie maakte tegelijkertijd bekend dat het aantal afgegeven bouwvergunningen in januari met 10,4 procent daalde tot 562.000. Een maand eerder werd er nog toestemming verleend voor de bouw van 627.000 huizen.

FRANKFURT (AFN) - De internationale kredietbeoordelaar Standard and Poor's (S&P) voorziet dat de financiële positie van Deutsche Börse zal verslechteren door de fusie met NYSE Euronext, een beursbedrijf met een lagere kredietwaardering. De vooruitzichten voor de kredietbeoordeling voor de lange termijn zijn op 'negatief' geplaatst, aldus S&P woensdag. De organisatie denkt dat de fusie voor NYSE Euronext wel gunstig uitpakt. Vooralsnog gaat S&P niet over tot het verlagen van de waarderingen van de schulden van Deutsche Börse. Ook die van NYSE Euronext worden gehandhaafd. Een lagere beoordeling betekent dat bedrijven meer rente moeten gaan betalen omdat de risico's toenemen. Door het samengaan van het Duitse concern met NYSE Euronext ontstaat het grootste beursbedrijf ter wereld. S&P verwacht dat de transactie ,,zeer kritisch'' onder de loep genomen zal worden door de Europese mededingingsautoriteiten.

HOORN (AFN) – Aannemingsbedrijf Heddes Bouwgroep in Hoorn dient een aanvraag tot faillissement in. Dit maakte het bedrijf met 325 medewerkers woensdagmiddag bekend. Maandag meldde Heddes Bouwgroep nog dat het bedrijf op korte termijn uitstel van betaling wilde aanvragen. Directeur Kees van Iwaarden van Heddes Bouwgroep stelt in een verklaring over te gaan tot een faillissementsaanvraag omdat hij de onzekerheid die ontstaat bij uitstel van betaling, ongewenst vindt voor zowel medewerkers, leveranciers als onderaannemers. Ook zegt hij mogelijkheden te zien voor een doorstart van het bedrijf in afgeslankte vorm.

Feb. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Family Dollar Stores Inc. surged the most in more than a decade in New York trading after investor Nelson Peltz offered to buy the retailer for as much as $7.6 billion, spurring speculation other suitors will follow. Peltz’s New York-based Trian Fund Management LP is proposing a bid of $55 to $60 a share, according to a regulatory filing, or up to 36 percent more than yesterday’s closing price. The stock rose as much as 27 percent, the most since March 2000.

DuPont wants acceptance from shareholders with 90 percent of Danisco's stock -- the level needed to delist the company and squeeze out minority owners -- to carry out the deal, which consists of $5.8 billion in cash and assumption of $500 million in debt.The 665 crowns ($120.4) per share offer runs to 2200 GMT on February 22, but DuPont can extend it if not all conditions are met. Analysts said that is increasingly likely as the take-up seems likely to fall short of target without derailing the deal. "Most likely there will be some kind of extension of the offer period because they might only get 40-50 percent acceptance," said Alm. Brand equities chief Michael Adam Adler whose company sold its Danisco shares after the bid.

Reuters) - Telecom equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent (ALUA.PA) is bullish about its prospects in the United States this year, after securing big contracts from major operators like Verizon (VZ.N) and Sprint Nextel (S.N). Robert Vrij, who heads Alcatel-Lucent's Americas business, told Reuters in an interview that the group was gaining market share in the U.S. and expected telecom operators' investments in network gear to grow this year. "The magnitude of what is happening in the United States, with three major operators rolling out new networks at the same time, is just amazing," said Vrij, referring to build outs at Verizon, Sprint and AT&T.

Ingelheim, Germany, 16 February 2011 – The fourth edition of the European PCV2 Research Award sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim saw a record number of applications showing the continued interest in Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV2) research: 13 researchers from ten different countries submitted proposals. Clinical disease associated with PCV2 infection is not a major issue nowadays as pigs can be protected very effectively by vaccination, and piglet vaccination has become routine use worldwide. Still, PCV2 remains to be a potential threat for global swine production and more research is needed to better understand the immunological aspects, the pathogenesis and epidemiology of this devastating disease, as well as the interaction of PCV2 with other potential pathogens. It is Boehringer Ingelheim’s intention to continuously support independent applied research in this field. A maximum of three prizes, each 25,000 euros, are granted to European researchers every year. The 2010 awards were recently presented to the award winners by Prof. Maurice Pensaert, former head of the Laboratory of Virology of the Ghent University in Belgium and chairman of the independent review board selecting the awarded projects, and Dr Joachim Hasenmaier, Head of Animal Health at Boehringer Ingelheim. The ceremony took place at the global headquarters of Boehringer Ingelheim in Ingelheim, Germany.
