Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Equinox Minerals Ltd., owner of Africa’s biggest copper mine, offered C$4.8 billion ($4.9 billion) in cash and shares for Canada’s Lundin Mining Corp., rivaling a share offer from Inmet Mining Corp.
Equinox will pay C$8.10 a share for Toronto-based Lundin, the Perth-based company said today in a statement. That’s 26 percent more than Lundin’s Feb. 25 close of C$6.45 a share. Buying Lundin, which has a market value of C$3.7 billion ($3.8 billion), will give Equinox four mines in Europe and a stake in a copper and cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A lack of new projects is forcing copper and gold producers to expand through acquisitions, BlackRock Inc., owner of the world’s largest mining fund, said last year.

(Reuters) - Fujifilm Corp (4901.T) has agreed to buy Merck & Co's (MRK.N) BioManufacturing Network, including two biotechnology manufacturing plants -- one in the United States and one in Britain, the companies said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Japanese business daily Nikkei said it will be for around 40 billion yen ($490 million). Under terms of the agreement, Fujifilm will purchase all of the equity interests in two Merck units, Diosynth RTP LLC and MSD Biologics Ltd, which together own all assets of the Merck BioManufacturing Network comprising plants in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, and Billingham in Northeast England. "This acquisition provides an important addition to our pharmaceutical business with diverse capabilities and technical expertise in production of protein therapeutics," Fujifilm Chief Executive Shigetaka Komori said in a statement on Sunday.

Compared with 2009, sales rose by 18% from EUR 118.4 million to EUR 139.3 million, with sales of both equipment and consumables increasing strongly. The net profit was EUR 4.6 million, compared with a net loss of EUR 15.9 million in 2009.
The group’s operational cash flow (EBITDA) rose from EUR 18.0 million in 2009 to EUR 31.3 million in 2010. The net profit in 2010 was EUR 4.6 million, including the negative result from the stake in Accentis of EUR 7.9 million.

LONDEN (AFN) - De Britse bank HSBC heeft de nettowinst vorig jaar ruim zien verdubbelen tot 13,16 miljard dollar (9,56 miljard euro). De winstexplosie was vooral te danken aan een aanzienlijke daling van het aantal 'slechte' leningen. De bank maakte de jaarresultaten maandag bekend. De winst voor belasting steeg zelfs 170 procent tot 19 miljard dollar in 2010. Volgens een verklaring van de bank zijn de voorzieningen op risicovolle kredieten met 47 procent gekelderd tot 14,04 miljard dollar. De totale opbrengsten van de bank groeide met 3,1 procent tot 68,3 miljard dollar. ,,De onderliggende financiële resultaten zijn verder verbeterd'', zei topman Stuart Gulliver. ,,Alle regio's en klantengroepen droegen bij aan de winst, nu de private banking sector en de Noord-Amerikaanse activiteiten het weer goed doen'', zei hij.

NEW DELHI (AFN) - De economie van India is in de laatste drie maanden van 2010 met 8,2 procent gegroeid ten opzichte van dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. In het voorgaande kwartaal vertoonde de economie in het Aziatische land nog een groeispurt van 8,9 procent. Het Indiase Bureau voor de Statistiek bracht het kwartaalcijfer maandag naar buiten. EPA India dankt de groei met name aan een bloeiende agrarische en financiële sector. Over heel 2010 stuwden zij de economie met 8,9 procent en respectievelijk 11,2 procent. De Indiase overheid verwacht dat de economie in het nieuwe fiscale jaar, dat op 1 april ingaat, met ongeveer 9 procent groeit. Daarmee zou de economie op het groeiniveau van voor de economische crisis uitkomen.

LONDEN (AFN) - Het Britse uitgeefconcern Pearson heeft vorig jaar 20 procent meer winst geboekt dan in 2009. Dat bleek maandag uit de jaarcijfers van de eigenaar van onder meer zakenkrant Financial Times en uitgeverij Penguin Books.
Het concern zag de operationele winst in 2010 groeien tot 743 miljoen pond (881 miljoen euro), tegen 619 miljoen pond een jaar eerder. De omzet steeg met 10 procent tot 5,66 miljard pond (6,63 miljard euro). ,,Opnieuw een bijzonder goed jaar voor Pearson'', concludeerde bestuursvoorzitter Marjorie Scardino.
De concurrent van Wolters Kluwer en Reed Elsevier wist de resultaten van alle divisies te verbeteren. Ondanks de moeilijke omstandigheden in diverse markten verwacht het bedrijf die lijn in 2011 door te kunnen trekken.
