The most high-profile example has been Goldman Sachs, which had planned to offer both U.S. and foreign investors a chance to own shares in Facebook through private placements. Net income rose from $3.38 billion in 2009 and beat the $4.21 billion median estimate of 18 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Bad-loan costs declined 56 percent and lending jumped 22 percent, Standard Chartered said today in a statement. Chief Executive Officer Peter Sands, whose bank gets most of its profit from Asia’s growing economies, said regulation poses the biggest threat as global lenders grapple with stricter capital rules. A U.K. bank levy set to take effect this year will cost Standard Chartered $180 million after tax in 2011, Sands said in the statement.

Swiss Life boekte in 2010 een nettowinst van 560 miljoen Zwitserse frank (436 miljoen euro), tegenover 277 miljoen Zwitserse frank een jaar eerder. De winstsprong is vooral een een gevolg van een agressief besparingsprogramma. Zwitserlands grootste levensverzekeraar wil zijn kosten tegen 2012 met 350 tot 400 miljoen Zwitserse frank verminderen ten opzichte van 2008. Ict-dienstverlener Logica en de Amerikaanse leverancier van software voor business intelligence QlickTech hebben een internationale samenwerking gesloten. De bedrijven werkten al samen op lokaal niveau. In Nederland moet de dienstverlener de positie van QlickTech uitbouwen onder grootzakelijke klanten.
De dienstverlener telt nu honderd consultants met kennis van QlikView (de software van QlikTech). Het dienstenbedrijf verwacht het aantal adviseurs met kennis van die software in 2011 te verdubbelen tot ongeveer tweehonderd man. Om dat te bereiken is een trainingsprogramma voor consultants opgezet.

Reuters) - The risk of bad deals is rising as competition heats up in Asia's booming private equity markets, Vinit Bhatia of industry consultants Bain & Co said at the Reuters Summit on Wednesday. "In China and India, you could argue some of the competition is irrational, said Bhatia. "It's really pricing deals out of the market for more traditional, more established players, and that's a big worry," said Bhatia, who agreed there was a risk that companies scrabbling around for deals were going to get their fingers badly burned. Bhatia's comments came on the same day as Reuters reported that two former D.E. Shaw and Goldman Sachs Group Inc partners were raising about $500 million for a China-focused private equity fund, to join growing competition for deals in the world's No.2 economy. "There is pressure to lower your standards to get deals done, and I think it's going to become even more important as pressures to lower standards grows, that big firms push to raise their standards," Bhatia said.

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- European producer-price inflation accelerated more than economists forecast in January, as soaring energy costs added to the European Central Bank’s concerns that inflationary pressures are building. Factory-gate prices in the euro region jumped 6.1 percent from a year earlier, after increasing 5.3 percent in December, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said today.

AMSTERDAM (AFN) - De producent van buis- en leidingsystemen Wavin gaat mogelijk in 2012 weer dividend uitkeren. Dat werd woensdag gezegd in een toelichting op de cijfers over 2010. Tot en met december 2011 wordt door Wavin geen dividend uitgekeerd omdat dat een voorwaarde is van de banken waarmee een kredietfaciliteit werd overeengekomen. Ook over 2009 werd geen dividend uitgekeerd, omdat er toen nauwelijks winst werd geboekt. ,,Vanaf 2012 kunnen wij weer dividend uitkeren'', zei financieel directeur Pim Oomens. Wavin zal de mogelijkheid over een winstuitkering gaan voorleggen aan de aandeelhouders op de algemene aandeelhoudersvergadering.

record $776 million, driven by higher earnings at its capital markets and
wealth management divisions.

The Bank of Canada left its target for the overnight rate at 1.0%, stating that the economy is growing at a pace slightly faster than expected; however, risks still remain due to the high Canadian dollar and poor productivity.
U.S. Construction Spending (Jan) fell 0.7%, less than the expected 0.8% drop, led by a 6.9% decline in non-residential outlays, while private residential spending was up 5.3% ISM Manufacturing (Feb) rose from 60.8 to 61.4, ahead of the consensus due to acceleration in both the employment and production components. ISM Prices Paid (Feb) came in at 82.0 while analysts were expecting 82.5.
Japan’s Unemployment Rate (Jan) was 4.9%, unchanged from December and an improvement over November’s rate of 5.1%.
U.K. Average House Prices (Feb) rose 0.3% for the month coming off a 0.1% decline in January.
Sweden’s GDP (Q4) grew 7.3% over the prior year, ahead of the 6.9% forecast by economists.
U.S. Domestic Vehicle Sales (Feb) jumped 6.5%, coming in at 10.2 million while analysts were expecting 9.7 million. Total Vehicle Sales (Feb) were 12.6 million, generally in line with the estimate of 12.67 million.

China Growth
Would you trash talk your largest creditor? China's headline PMI for February softened further by 0.7 of a percentage point (pp) to 52.2, the third consecutive monthly decline. The forward-looking new order index declined 0.6 pp to 54.3, while the output index was down 1.5 pp from the previous month to 53.8. The PMI input price index was up 0.8 pp to 70.1. Credit Suisse Chief Economist for Non-Japan Asia Dong Tao does not anticipate any monetary policy change in China because of this set of data. He maintains his view that the government should stay comfortable with the growth prospects on both the domestic and international fronts, though rising oil prices may add some risks. China has adopted a mild monetary tightening stance (or normalization), and Dong expects more required reserve ratio hikes and interest rate increases to follow. China’s excess liquidity conditions have sent asset prices higher each year, which poses a substantial risk to the health of the economy. Interest rates would need to be adjusted upward, in Dong's view, in order to calm the still robust demand for credit and lessen the negativity of the real interest rate level. The continued rise in the PMI input prices index highlights the need to put monetary conditions under control, but this will likely be balanced with China’s fear about uncertainties in the global economy, pertaining to a demand shock triggered by the surge in oil prices. Dong believes the pressure on raw material prices remains acute in China, fuelled by the resilience of the economy and an excess liquidity condition. He expects inflationary pressure to continue to rise in China. Dong still looks for CPI inflation to exceed the 6% mark around mid-2011, and thinks it may only moderate to 5.5% year over year by end-2011. Separately, according to revised data issued by the U.S. Treasury Department, China increased its holdings of U.S. debt to a record $1.175 trillion in October. China's investment totalled $1.16 trillion at year-end, the Treasury reported, raising the figure from the previous $891.6 billion. China is America’s largest creditor.

Glitzier than the Vegas Strip. Allied Nevada, the U.S.-based junior gold and silver producer, reported Q4/10 results, updated year-end reserves and reiterated 2011 guidance. Q4/10 adjusted EPS was $0.07/share vs. Canaccord Genuity Precious Metals Analyst Steven Butler's estimate of $0.15/share and consensus of $0.05/share, with the variance to his estimate explained mostly by higher exploration costs, expensed waste stripping costs and G&A costs offset partly by a tax benefit. There were no major operational surprises since operational results and 2011 guidance had been pre-released. During the quarter the company produced 20,000 oz Au and 42,900 oz Ag (sold 21,899 oz Au and 54,081 oz Ag) at net cash costs of $462/oz. 2011 production guidance remains unchanged for production of 125,000-135,000 oz at net cash costs of $450-490/oz. Proven and probable gold and silver oxide reserves increased by 7% to 2.559 Moz gold and 27% to 49 Moz silver from the interim update provided on August 2010. The company continues to make progress on the accelerated mining of the existing Hycroft oxide reserve base.
Overall capital expenditures were $27 million in 2010 and are expected to increase to $110 million in 2011. As the larger fleet of mine equipment comes on-line, the mining rate is anticipated to increase to 44 million tons in 2011 (from 26.5 million tons in 2010), with the goal being an ultimate increase to 88 million tons per year by the end of 2012. Butler believes Allied Nevada could be a reasonably strategic M&A target in Nevada. He sees substantial re-rating potential with a scoping study update expected next week, feasibility study in Q3/11 with related progress on financing and permitting. Allied Nevada has a 100% interest in the Hycroft open pit mine located in Nevada. Heap leach production is expected to accelerate to over 250,000 opy by 2012.

Die worden niet bedreigt door begrotingstekorten en andere steun maatrgels van Regeringen. Door de grote vraag en mindere productie van Goud en vooral zilver, zien wij voor dat laatste edelmetaal eind dit jaar de USA$ 50 (tax. XEA.nl) wel op de borden staan.

Ca. 10 jaar geleden wees XEA.nl haar lezers al bij de spreiding in de portefeuille op edelmetaal. Toen stonden er prijzen van ca. $350 - 450 voor goud en $6-8 voor zilver.
XEA.nl was de enige die op het edelmetaal wees en ca. 5-6 jaar gelden werden beleggers in het edelmetaal juist door hun bemiddelaars benaderd, verkopen die "handel", uit de tijd en het levert niets op.
Wij weten nu beter.

Daiichi Sankyo heeft aangegeven dat het Plexxikon gaat kopen voor een bedrag van 935 miljoen. Door de overname kan het Japanse bedrijf bepaalde rechten verwerven op een middel voor de behandeling van melanoom in een laat stadium (PLX4032). De overname versterkt niet alleen de oncologische pijplijn, maar zorgt ervoor dat wij onze zakelijke doelen kunnen bereiken, aldus Joji Nakayama, CEO van Daiichi Sankyo.

Vandaag rondt KPN de wijzigingen rondom Zakelijke Vaste Telefonie af. Alle Zakelijk BelBasis klanten hebben hiervan een bevestigingsbrief gekregen.
Klanten met een belbasis abonnement zijn per 1 januari 2011 overgegaan van een contract voor onbepaalde tijd naar een jaarcontract. Bij de overgang is de keuze geboden aan klanten voor een 1, 2 of 3 jaarcontract. Hoe langer de klant zich wilde vastleggen bij KPN, hoe meer korting hiervoor geldt. KPN komt hiermee tegemoet aan de wensen van haar klanten. Verder biedt KPN als een van de weinige marktpartijen de keuzemogelijkheid om een contract voor onbepaalde tijd af te blijven nemen. Om tegemoet te komen aan de vraag van haar klanten naar flexibiliteit, houdt KPN de mogelijkheid open om ook binnen de contractsduur te migreren naar andere producten van KPN zakelijke markt.

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke didn’t rule out expanding the central bank’s asset purchases aimed at stimulating the economy, saying he doesn’t want to see the economy relapse into recession.
Asked at a House Financial Services Committee hearing today what conditions would warrant a third round of so-called quantitative easing, Bernanke said that “what we’d like to see is a sustainable recovery. We don’t want to see the economy falling back into a double dip or to a stall-out.”

HOOFDDORP (AFN) - Vastgoedbedrijf Nieuwe Steen Investments (NSI) heeft twee nieuwe winkelpanden gekocht in winkelcentrum Zuidplein in Rotterdam. De winkels met een totale oppervlakte van 2500 vierkante meter kostten ruim 6 miljoen euro. Dat maakte NSI woensdag bekend. Eind 2010 kocht NSI als voor 24 miljoen euro aan het Zuiderterras, eveneens onderdeel van winkelcentrum Zuidplein. NSI bezit nu ongeveer 35 procent van het winkelcentrum. De huidige aankopen zijn verhuurd aan modeketen '1982' en fitnessclub SportCity. De huurinkomsten bedragen 450.000 euro per jaar.
