Teijin Chemicals to Expand Sales of Polycarbonate Film for 3D Glasses
Teijin Chemicals Limited, the core company of the Teijin Group's plastics business, has announced a plan to sharply expand sales of polycarbonate retardation film for 3D glasses that utilize the circular polarizing system. The aim is to double sales in the current fiscal year ending in March 2011 compared with the previous fiscal year.

Teijin Chemicals began full-scale supply of polycarbonate retardation film for circular polarizer 3D glasses in the middle of 2009 and already enjoys more than a 60% share of the market. The company's high-quality polycarbonate retardation film has already been widely used for liquid crystal displays and also is expected to enjoy increasing demand for organic electroluminescent displays in mobile phones.

The company boasts an integrated production system for the supply of polycarbonate film, encompassing from initial raw material processing to final sales. In particular, a high-speed manufacturing process now under operation for the production of polycarbonate film will enable Teijin Chemicals to cope with the expected growth in demand.

The circular polarizing system is the mainstream method of screening 3D movies, having been employed in many of the latest 3D movies in the U.S., Japan and other areas, and is projected to be adopted for 3D television as well.

3D systems deliver different images to the left and right eyes, which are reconstructed in the brain as a single stereoscopic image. In the circular polarizing system, left- and right-eye images are generated with the polarized light at different rotation direction. Circular polarizer 3D glasses made with retardation film and polarizer ensure that left and right images are transmitted only to the intended eye, with unwanted images being absorbed.
