On January 28, 2016, biopolymer manufacturer MHG received the distinguished Phoenix Award presented by the Metro Atlanta Chamber Bioscience Leadership Council and Georgia Bio, the state’s life science industry association.

The award recognizes MHG’s broadening sponsored research support and involvement with the University of Georgia’s Engineering faculty, as well as expanding their laboratory footprint in Athens.

“We are honored to receive this revered award this year for our work with academic institutions and research,” stated Phil Van Trump, Chief Technology Officer of MHG. “Our company has come a long way this past year and our research and laboratories at the University of Georgia and other schools have played a major role in our progress. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with UGA as we advance in the industry.”

MHG is the holding company of Meredian Inc., a global leader in the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) and DaniMer Scientific, L.L.C., a specialist in the customization of biopolymer formulations that combine PHA, PLA and other biopolymers through a proprietary reactive extrusion process. Last year, the company announced the expansion of their research and development capabilities through an arrangement with UGA, which allowed them to open a specialty lab on campus and gain access to the University’s unique resources to further advance formulas to meet customer’s needs. Additionally, the company contributed $50,000 to Dr. Jenna Jambeck’s research group at UGA, which would be used to test MHG’s PHA and analyze it against other materials in a marine environment.
MHG and its subsidiaries currently own more than 125 patents across nearly 20 countries. MHG is headquartered in Bainbridge, Georgia.

The Phoenix Awards are presented annually by the Metro Atlanta Chamber Bioscience Leadership Council and Georgia Bio to recognize organizations for being on the frontlines of education and innovation as well as their outstanding contributions to the growth of the state’s bioscience industry. The award represents the iconic “rising from the ashes” of the Phoenix — a symbol of strength, tenacity and leadership.

Now in its 18th year, the Georgia Bio annual awards dinner brings together industryleaders to advance the growth of the life sciences industry and foster strategic partnerships that can create a healthier world. (KL)
